Mona's Hot Four's weekly Tuesday night gig is the best-kept open secret in New York's burgeoning old-time jazz scene, and they're bringing it to the Bickford stage! The band "proper" evolved out of a weekly trad-jazz jam session at Mona's, in the Lower East Side, spearheaded by Dennis Lichtman in June, 2007. The adventurous, open spirit of the weekly gig has attracted countless notable special guests and continually spawns exciting and spontaneous collaborations, many of which were captured during the recording of the band's 2009 release, Live At Mona's.

Trombonist/composer/bandleader Gordon created a powerful evening-length work for his big band to accompany the historic Within Our Gates (1920), a silent film believed to be the African American response to D.W. Griffiths' "Birth of a Nation" that dramatically exposes America's racial situation during the violent years of Jim Crow, the Ku Klux Klan, the Great Migration, and the emergence of the "New Negro." Produced, written and directed by novelist/filmmaker Oscar Micheaux, it is the oldest known surviving film made by an African-American.
